Shopify theme detector
See which theme any Shopify store runs, which version of it, and what tracking it loads. Read from the details Shopify itself writes into every store's pages.
Free, no sign-up. Reads the store's public homepage once. Works on any store, not just yours.
Where the answer comes from
Every Shopify storefront page carries a small Shopify.theme object in its source, written by Shopify. It holds four things the detector shows you.
- The theme. The name in the theme's own settings, such as Dawn or Sense. A store that has customised Dawn heavily still says Dawn, because that is what its settings declare. A theme built from scratch shows its own name.
- The version. The theme's version number. Free Shopify themes are updated through the Theme Store, so an old version number can mean fixes the store has not taken.
- The name the store gave its copy. What the merchant called this copy of the theme in their admin, often a date or a release name.
- The Theme Store ID. Present when the copy is linked to a Theme Store listing. Empty for themes uploaded as a file or built in-house.
Beside the theme, the detector lists the tracking tags the store loads and the apps that add a pixel through Shopify, using the same reading as the Shopify pixel checker.
What this can and cannot tell you
What it reads
- The theme name and version from Shopify's own Shopify.theme object
- The name the store gave its copy, and any Theme Store ID
- Tracking tags on the homepage, such as the Meta Pixel, GA4 and Tag Manager
- Apps that add a pixel through Shopify, where their settings name them
What it cannot see
Apps that add nothing to the page, such as most back-office apps, and apps whose pixel settings do not name them. It cannot see whether any tracking tag fires on a real order, or what changes a store has made inside its theme code. It reads one page, the homepage.
Questions people ask
How do I find out what Shopify theme a store is using?
Enter the store's address above. Shopify writes the theme's name and version into every storefront page, and the detector reads it from the homepage. You can do the same by viewing the page source and searching for Shopify.theme.
Why does it say Dawn when the store looks nothing like Dawn?
Many stores start from Dawn, Shopify's free reference theme, and customise it heavily. The theme still declares itself as Dawn in its settings, so that is what Shopify writes into the page. The name the store gave its own copy is shown too, and often hints at the changes.
What does an empty Theme Store ID mean?
Shopify has not linked this copy of the theme to a Theme Store listing. That is usual for a theme uploaded as a file, a theme from outside the Theme Store, or one built in-house.
Can it tell me every app a store uses?
No. It lists the apps that add a tracking pixel through Shopify and whose settings say which app they are. Apps that put nothing on the storefront cannot be seen from outside the store.
Does the theme affect tracking?
It can. Tags pasted into a theme's theme.liquid run on the storefront only, because Shopify does not load theme code on checkout. Switching or updating a theme can also drop tags that lived in the old theme's code, which is a common way tracking breaks without anyone noticing.
